Culture in Belgrade

The Museum of Applied Arts is located in the very heart of Belgrade, near Knez Mihailova Street, which is the main shopping street in the city and at the same time a pedestrian zone leading to the most important tourist monument of Belgrade, the medieval fortress Kalemegdan.

It was founded in 1950 and has since been in a building that was known in the interwar period as the Celebonović Palace, by the name of the then owner, attorney Dr. Jakov Čelebonović.

The building where the museum is located was built between 1927 and 1929 and was built as a two-storey palace in an academic style, with a representative entrance and a spacious marble staircase with wrought iron railings. Although various adaptations have been made over time, the building has preserved the spirit of the time in which it was erected. The authors of this remarkable object of the Belgrade interior architecture are architects Stevan Belić (project), Nikola Krasnov (facade) and Neregar (interior decoration).

The Museum of Applied Art belongs to the category of artistic museum of specialized type. The founding fund of the Museum consisted of a collection of 3000 thousand items collected by the famous painter and graphic artist Ljuba Ivanovic, and over the years the fund has been enriched with purchases, gifts of citizens and donor legacies.

Today, the Museum has about 40,000 artefacts, among which there are works of exceptional artistic and cultural significance.

The Museum of Applied Arts has a dynamic exhibition program within its four independent galleries and organizes annual thematic studio exhibitions, the Salon of Contemporary Art, as well as guest exhibitions from the country and abroad.

On the second floor of the Museum, the exhibition “On the first (p) tour: The Museum of Applied Art” presents exhibits from museum collections of historical sections from the Department of Wood and Stylish Furniture, Department of Metal and Jewelry, Department of Textiles and Costumes, Department of Ceramics, Porcelain and Glass and the Department of Photography, applied graphics and art equipment of the book. A significant part of artifacts has been exhibited on this occasion for the first time after several decades, while a number of museum exhibits have been premiered at this exhibition.

The work process at the exhibition is an “attempt” to present a variety of museum material, and in that sense its end result is the “experimental” setting, as the first stage in the formation of future exhibition exhibitions of the Museum. The exhibited objects combine the belonging to the “small worlds of everyday life” of the modern civilian milieu and its various occasions, whose aesthetics have contributed.
